The Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University is one of the fastest-rising, highly ranked engineering schools in the nation. The school consists of four departments with 130 tenure-track faculty members, 1250 undergraduate students, 1400 master's students, and 600 PhD students. Occupational Summary

Joining a vibrant community of leaders dedicated to creating a welcoming environment to all, the Executive Director of Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Community (DEIC) will provide leadership in developing and implementing high-impact diversity and inclusion initiatives that engage all faculty, staff, and students in the Pratt School of Engineering. Develop and implement strategies to integrate effective diversity practices within Pratt's current framework, and monitor and quantitatively evaluate progress in creating a more diverse and inclusive work environment. Collaboratively develop and implement strategies for recruitment and retention to further the School's Diversity Strategic Plan. Design and deliver learning experiences, presentations, and workshops and provide consultation and support of efforts of diversity, equity, and inclusion for individuals and groups within the Pratt community.

Work Performed

  • Work with school leaders and supervisors to lead the development and modeling of actions while quantitatively assessing outcomes in the areas of diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Provide guidance and consult with Pratt staff, faculty, and students on a broad range of strategies, opportunities and initiatives that will further diversity and inclusion within the Pratt community.
  • Research and identify current and emerging issues, trends and opportunities related to diversity and inclusion, and develop programs and processes based on best-practices to promote diversity and inclusion.
  • Collaborate with university-wide subject matter experts to ensure that programming is complementary to, and in support of, Duke University's institutional diversity and inclusion goals.
  • Plan and manage budgets related to diversity initiatives; and obtain internal and external funding for programs, activities, and initiatives.
  • Assist and (when applicable) direct student recruiting, working closely with the Deans of Undergraduate Education, Masters Education, and Graduate Education.
  • In collaboration with the Co-chair of the Diversity & Inclusion Committee, develop and present diversity and implicit bias training and education to all faculty search committees in the Pratt School; develop and implement search committee best practices for increasing the diversity of all Pratt faculty and staff applicant pools.
  • Lead efforts to increase faculty, staff and student engagement in diversity activities and pursue external funding for specialized programs such as NSF AGEP, BPE or ADVANCE. In collaboration with Pratt's development team, identify and foster relationships with foundations and donors with an interest in these topics.
  • Establish and run events that bring students and faculty from regional minority-serving institutions to Pratt and lead REU and other activities targeted towards underrepresented groups to establish linkages with regional minority-serving institutions; primarily the School of Engineering at NC A&T, but also Bennett College, Fayetteville State University, Johnson C. Smith University, NCCU, Shaw University, and St. Augustine's University.
  • Ensure all DEIC programs, events, and training are rigorously assessed for effectiveness and to drive iterative design of programming.
  • Build a database of stakeholders engaged with DEIC programming for longitudinal engagement that aims to drive engagement with the Pratt community.
  • Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein.

Required Qualifications at this Level

Education/Training

A Master's Degree in higher education, sociology, social work, psychology, or other related field is required. A Ph.D. is preferred. A Master's degree or Ph.D. in human resources will also be considered.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of 7 years of experience with progressive responsibility in diversity, equity and inclusion education, training and development. Experience designing and implementing DEI initiatives in higher education or a complex institution. Candidates with programmatic experience and those with experience implementing DEI initiatives and programs at large corporations will also be considered.

Minimum Qualifications

Education
